What I Have Been Up To

I feel very bad about not writing in here for quite awhile.  But I have been busy!  On August 1st I put up 12 of my art pieces at our library.  It's a wall where local artists can display their artwork.  At first I was a bit nervous becuase I wasn't sure if I was up to snuff, as they say, but in the end I was mostly just excited.  My work will be there for a whole month!

Secondly, I went to a model session a few mondays ago, and I do believe I will start to frequent these model sessions, since I need to work on the human figure, and also it's a great price for two and half hours of drawing a person who actually stands still!

I also don't believe that I have mentioned that this fall I will be starting a Graphic Design Certificate at a community college! Yes, I have changed my paths a little here, but I am very very excited and I do believe that this is the right path to take.  Well, I will put up some pictures as soon as I am able :)

I'm Back

I feel very bad because I haven't posted anything since APRIL.  That is just unsatisfactory.  The problem is, I have been very busy, and whenever I am on the laptop, I never think to come on here.  So sorry.  Of course, maybe you haven't even noticed?  Alright anyhoo.  I haven't been neglecting art totally this summer. Infact I have been working feverishly on pieces for a month long exhibit at our local library.  I am very excited even though it's not like a real show or anything, but it is still exciting to me.  Most of my pieces are either acrylic or oil pastel, and I have been attempting to keep them the same sorts of pictures in order to make the exhibit flow and seem one show, instead of a bunch of diferent pieces put together.   I should load some pics when I have time.  I will be back SOON this time :)

Sunflowers

I know I said that I would be posting pictures of my colored pencil drawings, but here is what happened...my first drawing I did was of my horse.  As far as the horse itself, I think it looks pretty good if I do say so myself, but the actual colors of it, I had a little trouble with...the highlights and the dark places just don't quite look right.  Then I drew a ballet dancer.  I really enjoyed drawing this one!  But when I was finished, I realized one of the legs was too short (I guess I should have been stepping back and looking at my drawing like a good artist would haha).  And then I drew one more picture, but haven't gotten around to finishing it.  All in all, I feel a little bit ashamed of my colored pencil skills....I guess I will have to practice more.  To make up for the lack of colored pencil drawings, I will post (yet another) oil pastel--because, after all, it is one of my favorite mediums :)
I'm sorry I don't have a very good overhead picture, but I was having trouble with shadows and light....Anywhoo, I think one of my favorite parts when doing this, was peeling off the tape when i was done, to see what it would look like! I wanted to do something a bit different, and I remembered one my oil pastels of mountains in an earlier post, with a line down the center, so I decided to do a bit of a variation on that.  Tell me what ya think of the broken-up-ness of the picture!  I really wasn't certain how it would look when I was done...still deciding what I think of it, haha!

Colored Pencils

I just bought 12 colored pencils for $2.  Seemed like a pretty good price to me, plus they are Crayola.
I used to draw with colored pencils all the time, but I didn't bring them with me to college, and I miss drawing with them.  They are a lot of fun to use, and they blend nicely if you get a good brand of pencil.  You don't need too many colors either since they blend so well.  I'm super excited about this and can't wait to get coloring!!  I'll try and remember to post a colored pencil picture.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Art Show

Last week I submitted four oil pastels into an art show where the theme was "light"(I might have even written a post about it awhile ago...).  The art show was an immense amount of fun, but I was so nervous because I had to stand in front of people and give a brief little summary of each painting i.e. how I was inspired, or how it had to do with light.  Even though all the people I was presenting my work to were good friends, my hands still shook really hard and it was hard to hold my pieces still, haha.  Anyhow, two of the the pieces are the last two oil pastels that I posted on my blog (the water one and the person with their hands behind their head).  Here are the other two:

These are clouds behind a tree line, and the sunshine is coming up through the clouds

This is a hand turning on a light....nuff said.

Well, those are the oil pastels that I submitted to the art show. I had a lot of fun drawing them, especially the really vibrant colorful ones.  I'm glad I was able to overcome being un-inspired at first, when it came to the theme, and kudos to all the other artists and performers at the show! There were some really talented people there!  Can't wait for next year's show!

Not Too Happy

It doesn't even really look like water....
But, as I should remind myself, it's all a learning process and blah blah blah.....
This oil pastel is SUPPOSED to be light on water.  Ya know, like all rippily and all.
I don't know.  Something went wrong.  Maybe its the colors I chose to use.
I think I'll try and study some photos of rippily water and see if that sheds any light on where I went wrong.
Anyway, maybe better luck next time...

Rainy Day

What better thing to do on a rainy day then do an oil pastel?!  I haven't done an oil pastel in forever; I used for the first time some oil pastels I got from my dad for Christmas, and they were sooooo nice to work with! They glided on the page like actual paint!  So anyway, I did a little piece using LOTS of color, haha, I hope ya'll like it, and can tell what it is, haha.

St. Paddy's Day

I haven't drawn in absolutely forever, and consequently feel very guilty about it.  So, as today is St. Patrick's Day, I decided to draw a sheep (cause ya know, there are sheep in Ireland).  I'm not too happy with how the sheep's hair...(fur? coat?  fuzz? fluff?). It looks a little like scales, instead of matted hair/fur/coat/fuzz/fluff.

So there it is.

Of Late

I haven't done too much drawing lately, due to the fact that I have actually been studying a lot.  Which, I guess is what you are supposed to be doing in College.
Spring Break starts the day after tomorrow, and I'm going to try and get some drawing done.

Although I haven't been doing any actual drawings recently, I have been thinking about drawings; you see, there is an art show here at this fine university, and I hope to enter some drawings.  There is a theme though: Light.
It seems broad enough, but I'm having trouble of thinking up something creative.  I'd really love to do something original and maybe have a little twist to it.  But that horrid phrase keeps reminding me "it's easier said then done".
I have a bit more time to think about it, but I really can't wait to come up with something....the suspense is killing me.....

My People

Alright, so I really love to draw with pencils, and the other day I was trying to think of what to draw, and I was like, "Hey, this is a cool photograph of a person, I'll draw that!" But then I thought to myself, "Wait, what am I saying? I can't draw people!"
But what was my very last rant about??
Yah, I know, I'm such a hypocrite.....

So, I decided to practice drawing people.  And although it was hard, and frustrating, and i used up a lot of my erasers, I think I did get a tad bit better after awhile!
Here are some of my people drawings.  I tried to focus on parts of the human figure that I usually have trouble with: faces, hands, legs...umm, actually, I have trouble with the whole body....sooo.....haha, anyways, here are the pics...

A hand....had a lot of trouble with the thumb....

This is an eye.  I have a fascination with drawing eyes.  I love to draw them....
This is an arm at one's side (hopefully, though, you could tell)
These are legs. Walking legs.  The calves look fat....oh dear...

So after drawing a bunch of random body parts, I decided to put them together with a full body one....not so happy with the hands...they look.....hmmm, what's the right word....alien?  Strange?  Disturbing?  Hahaha :)

But, please, please, give me some feedback, people!  I NEED advice, on how I can draw people and hands and what not better, cause I'd love to be able to draw people really well :)
Have an awesome day!

My Rant of The Month

Alright, I am about to go on a rant....just bear with me...

Granted everyone has their talents, but even people with innate capabilities need to continue to work and master whatever talent it may be (Let's be reasonable, though, and forget about Leonardo, and Michael Angelo, and all those dudes and dudettes who obviously were given more then their fair share of natural talent).
What I am saying is that anyone can do almost anything if they try hard, and persevere.
Sooo, instead of sighing loudly at the sight of some great piece of artwork, and whispering to yourself in a self pitying way, "I wish I could do something like that..."  or  "The only thing I can draw are stick figures..."---Ummm, hello?  Have you never seen modern art??  I'm sure stick figures have a place in there somewhere, haha--- do something about it!

If you think you can't draw worth a darn, but wish you could be an artist, there are such things as art lessons.  Instead of looking at the world as if it against you, and shielding yourself with your own measly excuses, go out there, take action, and try your hardest to master whatever skill you wish you had.
As inspiration to you all, think of all those people through out history wanting to fly, people going to the moon,  Alexander taming Bucephalus, or the myriad of other feats that have been accomplish through perseverance and a little bit of enthusiasm!
Okay, but as I close, I want to make something quite clear: I have been known on many many occasions to sigh and whisper self pityingly to myself.  So this is as much a pep talk to myself as it is to others.  I am in no way, trying to be or sound "holier then thou", or make myself out to sound like I have never complained before or am always persevering and gaining all these amazing skills, haha, no.  But, it does bother me when people wish for and want something badly, yet they do nothing.
I hope this wasn't confusing..... or irritating...
    .....or.......
    well....
     I'll stop now....

     Have a great day ya'll!!!   :D

Diet Pepsi

This is what happens when my Professor is boring me to death about things that aren't even relevant to the class...I start drawing what is before me...and that day it was a diet pepsi bottle...it was an hour and fifteen minute class so I had plenty of time to work on it...I still am not quite pleased with how the wrinkly label turned out...hmmm, maybe this is a weak part in my art skills...I shall have to work on wrinkly labels.

A Few Little Pieces

I feel as though I have let you all down a little, in that I haven't written in forever.  Anyways, I am on winter break from college, and so I am no longer taking art lessons, BUT this has not stopped me from continuing drawing and such :)  So, here are a few little pieces that I have done....

I was inspired by an add I saw in a magazine (I believe it was for some cruise), but it had a big ship by these icebergs with the sun glowing on them creating all this color.  So I did my own little twist on it, eliminating the ship, and making them mountains instead of icebergs :)

This was actually done in my dorm room.  It's my room mate's kettle sitting in the window, with her yellow blanket on her bed.  The trees have leaves in my picture, but in real life they were naked...I just liked the color of the trees with leaves.
These are both oil pastels, which is one of my favorite mediums.
I promise I'll be posting more often!  See you all soon :)
